The following instructions apply to accessing the ASVI system with an ordinary touch-tone telephone.

The "voice" that reads prompts, messages, and data is actually a recording. There is no human intervention on the ASVI end of the line.

Access codes will be furnished to each county social service office, quality control reviewers, and appropriate units in the central office.

To query the system, dial the toll-free system access number via single-line phone or after receiving the outside line access if dialing through switchboard or PBX system as follows:

Dial 1-800-365-7620

Upon connection, the system will read the following message:

WELCOME TO THE INS ASVI SYSTEM . . . various messages . . . PLEASE ENTER YOUR AUTHORIZATION CODE FOLLOWED BY THE POUND (#) SIGN.

At this time, enter the access code, and press the pound sign (#) after the last number. For example:

*42*71*23*83222#

The system will read a second prompt:

PLEASE ENTER THE ALIEN REGISTRATION NUMBER.

Enter the A-Number. Remember to substitute a zero (0) for the leading "A." If the number has only seven digits, use an additional leading zero (0). The A-Number A12 345 678 is entered as 012 345 678, the number A1 234 567 is entered 001 234 567; the A 123 456 789 is entered as 123 456 789. Basically, you must dial nine numbers; therefore, always drop the "A" and zero fill in front to fill out the nine-digit number.

If a record for the Alien Registration Number used resides in ASVI, the system will read the following message:

THE ALIEN REGISTRATION NUMBER IS:

THE VERIFICATION NUMBER IS:

Note that the voice unit spells, rather than pronounces, the alien's first and last names. Listen to the entire message. Bearing in mind the guidelines given above for interpreting the fields returned, verify the data with the alien's documentation. Note the Employment Eligibility Statement and record the Verification Number in the case record.

If the A-Number cannot retrieve an ASVI record, the message below will be read by the system. As above, record the Verification Number in the alien applicant's records and on the Document Verification Request, Form G-845S.

Both system responses offer three options for continuation: The user may repeat the system response, perform another query, or terminate the session. To repeat the message generated by the current query, press the 1 key. Two repeats are allowed per A-Number queried. The 2 key will prompt the user to enter the A-Number for the next query. To end the session, and discontinue the telephone connection, the user must enter a 3, then hang up the phone.

If the user decides to end the call, the ASVI will read the following message:

THANK YOU FOR USING THE INS ASVI SYSTEM.

HAVE A NICE DAY.

An experienced user may speed the query process, saving both time and money, by starting to key information in its proper sequence before or during each prompt message. For example, the authorization code may be entered immediately after connection occurs. If a user realizes that he has inadvertently entered the wrong A-Number, he may press 2 at any time to receive a prompt for a new number. Likewise, the user may disconnect at any time during the call by entering a 3.

Conversely, long periods of inactivity will increase the cost of the query and may cause the user to be disconnected from the system. When this occurs, hang up the telephone and redial later to perform the query session. The system may not be able to readmit a specific authorization code for several minutes after a "time-out" has taken place.
