There is no limit on the number of months a household can receive Transition Assistance in the TANF 60-month lifetime count. However, the maximum number of consecutive months for Transition Assistance cannot exceed six months.

A Transition Assistance case may close after receiving six consecutive months of Transition Assistance or the household may remain eligible for ongoing assistance under “regular” TANF, provided all eligibility requirements continue to be met.

Example 1:

A family received Transition Assistance for September and October. When determining eligibility for November based on decreased earnings, November passes and is authorized as  “regular” TANF.

Example 2:

A family received Transition Assistance for September through February (six-month consecutive maximum). Eligibility for March will be based on the following household circumstances:

  •  If March fails for excess income, not due to the receipt of an extra check, the Transition Assistance must be authorized to close due to reaching the six-month maximum.

  • If March fails for excess income, due to the receipt of an extra check, March must be authorized as suspend under “regular” TANF.

  • If the household’s income decreased, and March is passing “regular” TANF, March must be authorized as open under “regular” TANF.

The paid benefit for Transition Assistance will determine all applicable counts such as the six-month maximum.
